Youth Xchange: Current Teams - Swansea (UK) / Chibutu (Mozambique)
Chibuto: VSO Mozambique have chosen to place volunteers in the Chibuto region of Mozambique (Gaza province) with the Millennium Village programme.
GX Volunteers will be complimenting VSO Mozambique’s four main goal areas of Securing Livelihoods, National Volunteering, Education and HIV/AIDS. GX volunteers will be placed with the local partner, the Millennium Villages programme, to promote sustainable community led progress toward achievement of all 8 of the Millennium Development Goals. The aim of the project is to show how an integrated approach to community-level development can translate the international MDG agreements into ground-level breakthroughs throughout rural sub-Saharan Africa. The Millennium Village in Mozambique is particularly focused on Agricultural development and farming economies.
Volunteers work will fall within two levels of the local government; the municipality and district council. As well as assisting the work of the Millennium Village to promote sustainable, scalable, community-led progress toward the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, Volunteers are likely to be in placements such as:
- Assisting local municipality in area of environment, and raising awareness of climate change
- Working with young people in local community centres, schools and youth clubs
- Placed with local civil society organizations both national and international on HIV prevention
- Supporting and promoting activities around youth participation and youth volunteering
Swansea: In Swansea volunteers will work through Global Xchange’s partner organisation YMCA Swansea. YMCA Swansea work locally to improve peoples’ quality of life through learning and participatory activity that will also impact upon their health and well being. They provide a diverse range of sports, educational and social support services for people of all ages to get the most out of life.
Volunteers will be placed within YMCA Swansea, and through their network of local organisations. They are likely to be volunteering in a variety of placements, such as working with local youth and BME organisations, within the arts and creative industries and promoting skills for employment.
